I’m on the road again, this time traveling to NYC with my family for some BIG EAST BASKETBALL! GO SYRACUSE! (I have to pause for a moment and admit that I am not a huge sports fanatic, but Syracuse IS Basketball!) Since we are leaving at 8am, I did some prep work last night for breakfast and snacks. I made good use of a small Chinese food container, and made overnight oats for on the go with: 1/3 cup steel-cut oats, 1/3 cup Greek Yogurt, 1/3 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk and cinnamon. My brother will never understand me and kept questioning me as I was putting everything together, “Why are you planning breakfast when you can get better food at Dunkin Donuts?” Hmmm, well Andrew, Loaded Overnight Oats versus Doughnuts…not that I have anything against doughnuts, I just happen to like my almond butter and filling steel-cut oats a bit more than a greasy-two-bite doughnut that leaves me hungry an hour later. But that’s just me. Actually, I’m the only person in my family that really eats breakfast
. It’s my favorite meal of the day, so you can imagine my disappointment. ANYWAYS, I added a Justin’s Almond Butter packet (good choice for on the go), 1/2 sliced banana and 1-2 TBS Crofter’s Asia Superfruit Spread.
I decided to have another “food-venture” by adding Crofter’s Asia Superfruit Spread to my overnight oats. I guess that means I am traveling with food and through food today. Their Asia spread contains Raspberries, Yumberries, Morello Cherries and Red Grapes. I’m actually surprised that I didn’t try this spread first. Who wouldn’t want to crack open a jar that contained something as fun sounding as yumberries?! My taste buds were tingling, it was such an unexpected tartness that I loved! I’ve never had a yumberry before but now know where the phrase “YUM” comes from, they were delicious! This would be amazing on a sice of whole grain sourdough bread with a bit of goat cheese!!
I also packed Bear Naked Fruit and Nut Granola into individual containers, two Greek yogurt cups, steel-cut oats, unsweetened vanilla almond milk, Jam, Amond Butter, Larabars, Clif Mini’s. Bananas and Apples. I’m not one to skip breakfast, even when the people I am traveling with opt out, so I thought it would be important to pack some healthy breakfast and snack options. Plus, I absolutely refuse to pay $10 for a bowl of granola, fruit and yogurt at a restaurant.
Healthy Travels,
Nora
How do you eat when you are away from home? Do you eat every meal at resturants or do you bring your own? Do you ever skip meals and snack through out the day?

GO CUSE! Sad about our showing in the Big East tourney, but at least we’ll make a number one seed for MARCH MADNESS.
dude everyone in blogworld has crofter’s, i need to get some! looks delish! eating away from home still stresses me out, i have to admit, but i am a lot better about it now than i used to be.in the past i would just skip meals/snacks b/c i didn’t think i could handle eating in a way that didn’t fit my regular routine, but NOT ANYMORE BABY! now i definitely pack enough food to tide me over!
I always pack food when I travel and try to hit up grocery stores for items that will keep and don’t require refrigeration. I refuse to pay $10 for granola and stuff at restaurants too. I usually will eat breakfast and lunch from my packed stuff and dinner out, and pretty much always have leftovers
It depends on where I’m going and who I’m traveling with. To be convenient I make sure to pack some clif bars and other such things so that I won’t go hungry if there aren’t any suitable vegetarian options. For a long stay I always stop at a nearby grocery store to stock up on some fruit for healthful snacks. But there’s rarely ever an instance where a restaurant won’t have anything suitable (even most fastfood restaurants have veggie burgers, while as bland and awful as they can be are way better than surviving on protein/granola bars!)
Delicious looking overnight oats!!:) I’m out of town right now and MISS THEM so much!
ahhh i never skip meals or snack!
i usually pack snacks JUST in case but its more fun if i dont have to eat them-i like being spontaneous when im out of town!
Hey!
Thanks for stopping by my blog, I’m thrilled of every comment I get
When I travel I usually eat out, but if I’m somewhere where I’m staying with friends/family then I also eat at “home”
but I love travelling (also) because then you can go to different restaurants EVERY DAY
i love that crofter’s jam!
Eating away from home depends on where I am and how long I’m there. I try to pack snacks to keep with me (nuts, trail mix, Larabars, etc) in case I get hungry and we pack food for road trips.
Your brother sounds like my mom’s boyfriend when I first moved back here
And my response in my head was always the exact same as yours! Even when they get Subway for lunch and offer me some, I kindly decline – I have a fridge full of my own delicious veggies, breads, and condiments – why pay someone for something I can make better myself?!
sorry about that!
And totes hear ya’ on the breakfast thing. My mom is NOT a b-fast eater, and sometimes I just want to make a nice breakfast for the both of us! Ah well. I, on the other hand, can NOT function without a solid breakfast. I wake up thinking “breakfast!”
I try to bring my own food and snacks when traveling. I used to eat out ALL the time, but I’ve grown past that. It would have been affordable had it been McD’s, but it’d always be good deli foods, haha.
I’d rather pack, especially if I don’t know what will be available and when. Luckily, I’m pretty much always home for breakfast, and don’t know how I would handle it if I was caught unprepared! I admire your breakfast pre-planning – I probably would have just grabbed an english muffin with some PB&J and a banana. Yummy, but nowhere near Overnight Oats!
